Home Office Organization

Welcome to home office organization 21st century style! I'll be taking you through the journey of getting my own home office organized. I've published one "before" and one "after" picture on this Hub, and there are more on my blog. Please visit me at home office organization !

Your office, especially your home office, should be a tool to help you accomplish your work, not a mess added to your life to stress you out. I have tips and articles on using technology to organize your home office, including PDAs and tips on making your office mostly paperless. So click on over, or see one of my articles on the RSS feed below! Home office organization has never been easier than it is today. And together, we'll get all of our home offices neat, orderly, and running the way we need them to run.

A neat, clean, organized office is the key to peace of mind and to increased profits as well. Please leave comments at the bottom of this Hub. I'd love to hear what you think.

This is what my desk looks like after I cleaned it. I'd forgotten what color it is!

Organizing Tools and Resources

It's important to organize yourself to be able to organize other things in your life, like your home office. Personally, I use a Palm Tungsten E personal digital assistant (PDA) to keep me on track and on time. I have some of the tools I use and recommend in the Amazon widget below. I've also written extensively on my blog about these items. Please take a few minutes to browse through the advantages of using a PDA and keeping a more than less paperless office on my blog. The feed is directly above this widget.

It's essential for keeping things from falling through the cracks. If you're a small business owner like me, you know how important it is to keep track of details to keep your clients and customers happy and coming back regularly.

When I started my organizing journey, I started with myself. After I got myself organized, it was easier to start organizing my home office desk (see before and after pictures above). Once my desk was organized, it is much, much, much easier to see what I need to get done. Everything I need to do in my office, both personal and business, is in one of my 6 stacked trays on my desk. My tape, pencil sharpener, stapler, pen cup, stacked trays, calculator and phone are all within easy reach from my seat at the desk. These are things I use every day. Other things in my office space are things I use at least a few times a month.

There are two more trays not on the desk. One is my out-going mail basket which is located close to the exit. That way I don't forget to grab it on my way out to go to the post office. The other is my shred pile. I don't have a box for that yet, so I stack papers to be shredded in front of the shtredder on the floor. As soon as I get an empty box the right size, it will go on the floor in front of the shredder. I try really hard to shred things as I go so I don't have to take time to shred a bunch of paper. But if I'm cleaning out things where lots of paper is being discarded, I'll stack it and shred it all at once.

I'm still working on the rest of the office, so stay tuned for updates and be sure to check out the latest blog posts. Happy organizing!

Hey Sherri

I really like that idea of the desk. Mine currently looks like yours did. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks, as soon as I get the spare bedroom (aka junk room) finished mine will look much better. I have to wash the walls, etc down then paint tomorrow. Well at least the first coat of paint will go on. Then next weekend I will move in. No windows to look out of though. Anyway, I hope to become more productive. I have surely cleaned a lot of stuff out of there today.

Great work you do there my friend.

Using free and open source software applications is a great way to organize your home office/small office as well as save money on expenses. DealDogs.net has an interesting article entitled "FreeOffice: 10 Great Free Apps For Instant Office Productivity" that reviews ten no-cost applications that work great. This is the article link http://dealdogs.net/?p=14362 which provides descriptions, links and videos about each application, from a word processing office suite to free faxing.
